SAINT
PETER'S WEBSITE - OLD BULLETINS
Visitors to Saint Peter's website may have
noticed that it contains every bulletin for the past eighteen months and at least
one for each year from 1960 to 1995. It would be good to include the missing years.
If you have an old bulletin, perhaps kept as a souvenir of a family event, it
could be used to 'fill the gap'. If you can lend a bulletin issued between 1996
and 2004, please contact WebsiteAuthor@SaintPeterinChains.net.
Bulletins will be returned promptly.
CLOSURE

for the attention of Mr Peter Timmons at Saint Andrew's Academy or hand them into
the school office. Please label the photos and add name and address of owner for
safe return.

THANKS FROM GORDON STEVENSON
I would like to
express my sincere thanks to John
Dolan, who on behalf of the parishioners of Saint Peter's, gave me such an
unexpected and generous vote of thanks at the Vigil Mass last Saturday and for
the beautiful panoramic photograph which I will have framed when I get to America.
I would also like to thank all those who gave me cards, gifts and offered me good
wishes, the choir and the Music Ministry for what they have done over the years
and I hope that the music will continue to grow. I will miss you all very much.
ANNUAL
MISSION LETTER
Love
- the Soul of Mission
Until October last year, had anyone asked me what
that phrase meant I would have confidently launched into a theological explanation
and probably have been very satisfied with myself. However, last year, some teenagers
in India unknowingly opened my eyes and thoughts to what the Holy Father has so
beautifully explained in his Mission Sunday letter.
While visiting orphanages
and homes in India that are supported by the Pontifical Mission Societies, the
young people invariably welcomed us with a display of cultural dancing. Watching
the children in one audience I noticed a young girl whose eyes betrayed a deep
inner sadness. She sat with the others neither smiling nor moving to the rhythm
as did her friends.
One of the dancers eventually reached out and taking
her hand led her into their circle. With great reluctance she joined their play
and at the end the briefest smile sprang to her lips and momentarily her eyes
sparkled.
This young lady, I later learned, had been rescued from a house
of ill repute by a group of sisters. She had been subjected to humiliation that
I need not detail here but which had darkened the very spark of life in her soul.
The good sisters counselled and encouraged her with little success.
At
that moment, (blessed for me), I saw in vivid reality, the message of the letter
to the Hebrews. One like her, the other dancer, offered a hand and without words
imparted the message, - Yes I know what you are suffering, but its all right now,
you can play with us, you are free, you are safe - you are loved.
The sisters
who run the institution head experienced in their lives God's love for them. With
an inspiring courage they stretched that love to the children whom they rescued
and they in turn could impart God's infinite love to their peers.
The service
of which the Lord Jesus speaks in the Gospel today, enables us to know that we
are loved and this we in turn bring to our brothers and sisters through our Church's
mission.
Once again I have been permitted to see the depths of God's love
translated in a practical way to the most vulnerable of His children.
I
offer you this simple, yet profound, experience as a reminder of what you do each
Mission Sunday when you contribute so generously to this collection. You give
witness to our sure knowledge of God's love for us that was made visible in Jesus
our Supreme High Priest.
The letter to the Hebrews offers true hope to
those beset by their limitations and frailty. Each Mission Sunday we Scots offer
that same encouragement by our support of the Society for the Propagation of the
Faith.
Last year in Scotland we raised £357,834 through the second
collection at Mass. Yet again you contributed more than ever before. From all
its sources, on your behalf MISSIO Scotland was able to send US$786,826 to assist
the church in continuing the Lord's ministry of service.
As well as helping
local bishops in their service for the relief of those in need and of building
churches (8 built this year), schools and hospitals you assisted in projects as
diverse as:
- a centre for the handicapped in Burundi
-
an orphanage in Chile
-
schools in Syria
-
assistance to the prison
ministry in the Philippines
-
a health and social
centre in the Philippines
-
children's homes in
Somalia and Ecuador
-
a family centre in Nigeria
-
clean water projects
in Nigeria
-
scholarships for disadvantaged
children
-
seminaries in Nigeria
and India
In
total you assisted communities within 28 dioceses stretching from one side of
the world to the other.
Once
more you have helped restore to the poor their human dignity; you have worked
together with local communities empowering them to direct their own future and
allowed them to experience the Lord by your response to their need.
Each
time I meet those who have been assisted by MISSIO, I remind them that it is the
people of Scotland who made this possible. Now on their behalf, I have the opportunity
to express their and my own very inadequate "Thank you".
I
dare say that it will take many years and many hands to finally heal the heart
of the young lady whom I met in India, but for as long as is necessary our Church
will be there to offer her and many like her the help and support that they need.
Please
remember the Mission of the Church in your daily prayer and be as generous as
possible to this year's Mission Sunday Collection. In your name, MISSIO Scotland
will continue to share your faith and your love as Christ is shared with us. He,
after all, is the very soul of Mission.
Sincerely
Father
Pat

READINGS
The readings for this weekend's Masses are shown below in English. They are available
in eleven other languages
including French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish by clicking on this
link.
First
Reading Isaiah 53:10-11
The
Lord has been pleased to crush his servant with suffering. If he offers his life
in atonement, he shall see his heirs, he shall have a long life and through him
what the Lord wishes will be done. His souls anguish over he shall see the light
and be content. By his sufferings shall my servant justify many, taking their
faults on himself.
Second Reading Hebrew
4:14-16
Since
in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through
to the highest heaven, we must never let go of the faith that we have professed.
For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses
with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though
he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace,
that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.
Gospel
Mark 10:35-45
James
and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. "Master," they said
to him, "we want you to do us a favour." He said to them, "What
is it you want me to do for you?" They said to him, "Allow us to sit
one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory." "You
do not know what you are asking" Jesus said to them. "Can you drink
the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be
baptised?" They replied, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The
cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must
be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left,
these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted."
When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John,
so Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that among the pagans
their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority
felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among
you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave
to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many.".
