A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE APOCALYPSE (Matthew 16:13-20)
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he put this question to
his disciples - "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" - and they
said "Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah and others Jeremiah
or one of the prophets." "But you" he said "who do you
say I am?" Then Simon Peter spoke up "You are the Christ" he
said, "the Son of the living God." Jesus replied "Simon, son
of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed
this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you - You are Peter and
on this rock I will build my Church - and the gates of the underworld can
never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven. Whatever you
loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven." Then he gave the
disciples strict orders not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
REFLECTION
This Gospel passage tells us something important about the ministry of Our
Lord. It clearly shows that he wanted a community of faith to follow him -
a Church - and that he recognised it would need human leadership. The nickname
bestowed on Simon - Peter, meaning Rock - might seem amusing, even ironic,
given Peter's rather poor track record after this. But Peter's faith eventually
became the firm foundation of the Church, like the 'house built on rock' of
another of Jesus' parables! It's easy to point to 'bad' Popes in two thousand
years of papal history - and in discussion with non-Catholic friends, or even
family, you may find this coming up quite often! But the humanity of Saint
Peter, which was refined by the Lord's mercy, became the Rock on which we
are still resting after all these centuries. Let us pray for ourselves, that
we may overcome our frailties and for our Holy Father Pope Francis, that he
may be given strength to continue the mission entrusted to Peter.

A
SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF THE MASS - PART 12
At Communion time, the priest and the people take a solemn moment to prepare
themselves to receive Holy Communion. Holding the large Host above the chalice,
the priest says "Behold the Lamb of God." These are the words used
by John the Baptist (John 1:29) when he saw Jesus during his Baptism ministry
at the Jordan. The congregation responds "Lord, I am not worth"
These are the words spoken by the Roman centurion when he asked Jesus to heal
his servant (Matthew 8:8). The centurion is a model of faith, humility and
confidence for all of us waiting to receive Jesus, the Lamb of God, in Holy
Communion. When the priest takes the bread and wine into his hands and elevates
them for all to see, it is as if Christ is calling out to us and saying "Here
I am present in your midst under forms of life - bread and wine - to remind
you that I am your life and you will have life forever if you come to me and
learn from me to love the Father as I do. Here I am bread and wine to be shared
- eaten = consumed so that I may become part of you, enter into your life
and sustain you. Here I am as a total gift - as a sign that to be like me,
you have to be ready to give yourselves for others. Here I am sharing symbols
of life and joy because I want you to live my life and share my joy. Here
I am as a sign of life freely given, freely shared so that all might come
and none be turned away. Here I am for you because I love you."
PRAYER
FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My
Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things and I passionately desire
to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
come spiritually into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now
and forever. Amen.
PRAYER
DURING A PANDEMIC
May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose
between preserving their health or making their rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools
close remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no safe place
to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market
remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.
As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other,
let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbours. Amen. Cameron

FOOD
FOR THOUGHT
If you are to resist the ever-present pressures to dilute the Christian ideal
of holiness that surround you at every level of society and in almost every
environment, you need God's help. You need God's strength. You need God's
encouragement. Pray and listen to the voice of God in your life.
SATAN'S
GARAGE SALE
Once upon a time, Satan was having a garage sale. There, standing in little
groups were all of his bright, shiny trinkets. Here were tools that make it
easy to tear others down for use as stepping stones - and over there were
some lenses for magnifying ones own importance, which, if you looked through
them the other way, you could also use to belittle others, or even one's self.
Against the wall was the usual assortment of gardening implements guaranteed
to help your pride grow by leaps and bounds - the rake of scorn, the shovel
of jealousy for digging a pit for your neighbour, the tools of gossip and
backbiting, of selfishness and apathy. All of these were pleasing to the eye
and came complete with fabulous promises and guarantees of prosperity. Prices,
of course, were steep - but not to worry! Free credit was extended to one
and all. "Take it home, use it and you won't have to pay until later!"
old Satan cried as he hawked his wares. One visitor, as he browsed, noticed
two well worn, nondescript tools standing in one corner. Not being nearly
as tempting as the other items, he found it curious that these two tools had
price tags higher than any other. When he asked why, Satan just laughed and
said, "Well, that's because I use them so much. If they weren't so plain
looking, people might see them for what they were." Satan pointed to
the two tools, saying "You see, that one's Doubt and that one's Discouragement
- and those will work when nothing else will."
JUST FOR A LAUGH ...
A priest and a bus driver both died and went to heaven at the same time. They
get to the pearly gates where Pope Saint Peter greets them. He motions to
the priest and they both hop in a jeep and go out the back door. There are
about fifty acres of rolling hills with a little cottage on the knoll. Saint
Peter turns to the priest and says "This will be yours for eternity.
A perfect little cottage, right next to lovely pond, a lush little garden
and a library full of books." The priest says, "Thank you so much.
This I shall enjoy!" Saint Peter drops off the priest, goes back to the
pearly gates and motions to the bus driver. They hop in a stretch limo and
go out the front door. There are about five hundred acres of land with mountains
and lakes and rivers. There is a huge two-hundred room castle on one of the
mountains and a wishing well that makes wishes come true. Saint Peter says
"This will be yours for eternity. You can live in that castle with servants
to wait on you hand and foot, and you can have everything you want."
The bus driver looks and Saint Peter and says "Well, now, don't think
I'm not grateful but why am I getting so much more than the priest?"
Saint Peter just laughs and says "You brought more souls to heaven! When
the priest preached, everyone fell asleep. When you drove your bus, people
prayed like mad!"
