A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (Matthew 5:1-12)
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined
by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them. "How
happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy the gentle:
they shall have the earth for their heritage. Happy those who mourn: they
shall be comforted. Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they
shall be satisfied. Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.
Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God. Happy the peacemakers: they shall
be called sons of God. Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute
you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and
be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven."
REFLECTION
Today is a celebration of the 'ordinary saints' - not the Popes and bishops
and miracle workers and missionaries of bygone ages, but the ordinary folk
who have lived this life close to Jesus, taking for their model the vision
he sets out in today's Gospel - the Beatitudes. They are in so many ways the
opposite of what the world says brings lasting fame and fortune but what we
celebrate today is that there is a 'fame and fortune' which outlasts anything
this world can give: heaven. No one should ever say "I can't be a saint."
With the aid of the wonderful forgiveness of God, which Jesus constantly proclaims,
we can overcome all things so that planted in God's love and nourished by
that same love, we may join that happy multitude already in heaven, fulfilling
our God-given destiny by becoming saints ourselves.

PRAYER
FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into
my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into
my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
PRAYER
TO SAINT MICHAEL, ARCHANGEL
May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle we are told about in the
Letter to the Ephesians - Draw strength from the Lord and from his mighty
power (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle,
recalling before our eyes the image of Saint Michael the Archangel (Revelation
12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had a very vivid recollection of this scene
when, at the end of the last century, he introduced a special prayer to Saint
Michael throughout the Church. Although this prayer is no longer recited at
the end of Mass, Saint Pope John Paul asked everyone not to forget it and
to recite it to obtain help in the battle against forces of darkness and against
the spirit of this world.
Saint
Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the
wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and
do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God cast into
hell, Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking
the ruin of souls. Amen.
A SIMPLE
EXPLANATION OF THE MASS - PART 21
This week we will continue our meditations of the Mass with the Concluding
Rite. The Concluding Rite of the Mass consists of a blessing and sending forth
into the world. The priest raises his hand in blessing, the people sign themselves
"in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"
just as they did at the beginning of the Mass. To bless God means to praise
God for his goodness and wonderful gifts. To bless a person is an action requesting
that God continue to extend his generosity. In this final blessing, the priest
prays that the greatest of all benefits may be given in abundant measure to
those who have shared in God's Word and Christ's Body. Such an action upon
departure is found in the New Testament when Christ, before being taken up
into heaven, raised his hands and blessed the apostles (Luke 24:50) - The
Mystery of Faith, page 121 and following. At the beginning of the Mass, we
were enjoined to "Let us pray". Now we are instructed to "Let
us act" - act as people touched by the Lord. We are sent forth to be
the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. We are to be the bread of life for
others. We are to share the Good News of God's love for all with others. We
are sent forth to continue the saving work of Jesus in human history.
MY ANGEL'S NAME
Once upon a time, there was a child ready to be born. One day he asked God
"They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow. How am I going to
live there being so small and helpless?" God replied "Among the
many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take
care of you." "But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything
else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy." "Your
angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day - and you will
feel your angel's love and be happy." "And how am I going to be
able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language that
men talk?" "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet
words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will
teach you how to speak." "And what am I going to do when I want
to talk to you?" "Your angel will place your hands together and
will teach you how to pray." "I've heard that on earth there are
bad men. Who will protect me?" "Your angel will defend you even
if it means risking its life." "But I will always be sad because
I will not see you anymore." "Your angel will always talk to you
about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though
I will always be next to you." At that moment there was much peace in
Heaven but voices from earth could already be heard - and the child in a hurry
asked softly "Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's
name." "Your angel's name is of no importance, you will just call
your angel - Mummy."
JUST FOR A LAUGH ...
A
young woman brought her fiancée home to meet her parents. After dinner,
her father asked the young man into his study for a chat. "So, what are
your plans?" the father said. "I'm a theology scholar" the
young man replied. "Admirable" the father said "but what will
you do to provide a nice home for my daughter?" "I will study and
God will provide" the young man explained. "And how will you afford
to raise children?" the Father asked. "God will provide" said
the young man. The men left the study and the mother asked her husband "How
did it go?" "Very well. I like him. He has no money or employment
plans" the father said, "but on the other hand, he thinks I'm God."
NOVEMBER LISTS
Our lists of deceased loved ones and family will be placed on the altar during
the month of November so that we can keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
The Church remembers all those who have died and gone before us marked with
the sign of faith. The following traditional Catholic prayer asks that we
might have the right attitude to death and be prepared whenever it comes.
Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, assist me in my last
agony.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, may I breathe forth
my soul in peace with you. Amen.
REMEMBRANCE
SUNDAY SERVICES
The annual Remembrance Sunday services will not go ahead as usual because
of the Covid restrictions. Representatives from the different parishes and
organisations will lay wreaths at the monuments then depart.
SUNDAY
OBLIGATION
Sunday obligation to attend Holy Mass remains suspended for the time being
and availability is restricted for those wishing to attend. Some of our parishioners
are working during the week and can only attend at the weekend. Therefore,
to make Holy Mass available to everyone we would be grateful if you wish to
attend Mass and are able to attend on a weekday please do so, leaving seats
for those parishioners working during the week. Thank you.
FINANCIAL
SUPPORT
It is now possible to make online donations to Saint Peter's. Details are
on the Donations page and this News
page. Thanks for your generosity.
STANDING ORDERS - PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT
The parishes have taken quite a 'knock' through lockdown when public Mass
was not available for sixteen weeks. This has had a huge impact on our parishes'
finances. Could you consider taking out a Standing Order? It would be of great
benefit to our parish. Forms are available from the Parish Office and here.
Thank you
HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY
