A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET JONAH (3:1-5.10)
The word of the Lord was ad dressed to Jonah: - "Up!" he said. "Go
to Nineveh, the great city and preach to them as I told you to." Jonah
set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh
was a city great beyond compare. It took three days to cross it. Jonah went
on into the city, making a day's journey. He preached in these words - "Only
forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed." And the people
of Nineveh believed in God. They proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from
the greatest to the least. God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour
and God relented. He did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.
A READING
FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF SAINT PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (7:29-31)
Brothers, our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though
they had none and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to
mourn for. Those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing
to laugh about. Those whose life is buying things should live as though they
had nothing of their own and those who have to deal with the world should
not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is
passing away.
A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK (1:14-20)
After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed
the Good News from God. "The time has come" he said "and the
kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News."
As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother
Andrew casting a net in the lake - for they were fishermen. And Jesus said
to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men."' And
at once they left their nets and followed him. Going on a little further,
he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They too were in their boat,
mending their nets. He called them at once and, leaving their father Zebedee
in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him..
THE
LORD'S DAY AT HOME
If
you are housebound or self-isolating at this time, please use these prayers
to unite yourself with the worship of the Universal Church, and your own parish,
this Sunday. If alone, read or say these prayers quietly to yourself. If with
another, or in a family, someone should read the Gospel and others respond.
It might be suitable to find a special, quiet place at home for your Sunday
prayers.

URGENT - ACT NOW TO STOP DO-IT-YOURSELF (DIY) ABORTION SERVICES BEING
MADE PERMANENT IN SCOTLAND
The Scottish Government is currently deciding on whether to make the temporary
measure allowing DIY' home abortions in Scotland permanent. Since home abortions
were temporarily allowed, a number of significant problems have put the lives
and health of many women in danger. It is vital that as many people as possible
contact their Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to ask them to write
to the First Minister and other relevant ministers laying out the serious
dangers with DIY home abortions and ask them to ensure that the temporary
order allowing DIY home abortion is revoked as soon as possible and not made
permanent. Right To Life UK has set up an easy-to-use tool which makes it
simple to contact your MSPs in less than one minute. This tool can be accessed
by visiting www.RightToLife.org.uk/notodiyabortion.
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY - 18 TO 25 JANUARY
2021
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2021 was prepared by the Monastic
Community of Taize in France. The theme that was chosen, 'Abide in my love
and you shall bear much fruit', is based on John 15:1-17. We cannot bear fruit
on our own. We cannot bear fruit separated from the vine. It is the sap, the
life of Jesus flowing through us, that produces fruit. Remaining in Jesus's
love, remaining a branch of the vine, is what allows his life to flow through
us. When we listen to Jesus his life flows through us. Jesus invites us to
let his word abide in us (John 15:7) and then whatever we ask will be done
for us. For the eight days of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2021,
there are eight themes, where we can focus our prayer for the day. These are:
• Day 1: Called by God - 'You did not choose me but I chose
you.' (John 15:16a)
• Day 2: Maturing internally
- 'Abide in me as I abide in you.' (John 15:4a)
• Day 3: Forming one body -
'Love one another as I have loved you.' (John
15:12b)
• Day 4: Praying together -
'I do not call you servants any longer … but I have called you friends.' (John
15:15)
• Day 5: Letting oneself be
transformed by the Word - 'You have already been pruned by the word.' (John
15:3)
•
Day 6: Welcoming others - Go and bear fruit, fruit that will last.' (John
15:16b)
• Day 7: Growing in unity - 'I am the vine, you are the
branches.' (John 15:5a)
• Day 8: Reconciling with all of creation - 'So that my
joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.' (John 15:11).
PRAYER
FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into
my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually
into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER TO MARY DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
The following prayer is offered to support us during this threat of the
coronavirus.
|
O
Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation
and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot
of the cross, were united with Jesus' suffering, and persevered in
your faith.
Protectress of Church, you know our needs, and we know that you will
provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return
after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of
the Father and to do what Jesus tells us.
For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with
our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.
Amen.
We
fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions
in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious
and Blessed Virgin. Amen. |
THE
BEAUTIFUL HANDS OF A PRIEST
We need them in life's early morning, We need them again at its close
We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, we seek them when tasting life's
woes
At the altar each day we behold them and the hands of a king on his throne
Are not equal to them in their greatness, their dignity stands all alone
And when we are tempted and wander to pathways of shame and of sin
It's the hand of a priest that will absolve us - not once, but again and
again
And when we are taking life's partner, other hands may prepare us a feast
But the hand that will bless and unite us is the beautiful hand of a priest
God bless them and keep them all holy for the host which their fingers caress
When can a poor sinner do better than to ask him to guide thee and bless?
When the hour of death comes upon us, may our courage and strength be increased
By seeing raised over us in blessing = the beautiful hands of a priest
CATHOLIC ONE-LINERS
• Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.
• Don't put a question mark where God put a period.
• Don't wait for six strong men to take you to Church.
• Forbidden fruits create many jams.
• God doesn't call the qualified - he qualifies the called.
• God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.
• He who angers you, controls you!
• If God is your co-pilot - swap seats!
• When praying, don't give God instructions -- just report
for duty!
• The task ahead of us is never as great as the power
behind us.
• We don't change the message, the message changes us.
• You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to
discourage him.
• The best mathematical equation I have ever seen - 1
cross + 3 nails = 4 given.
• Don't keep the faith - spread it around.
TELL JESUS I LOVE HIM
A grandmother recently went to dinner at a restaurant with her son and two
grandchildren. They were sitting at the table waiting for their food when
the five-year-old asked "Grandma, what was your mummy like? "She
was a very wonderful lady, Clare" said Grandmother. "Your Daddy
knew her, too." The five-year-old looked at her Dad and said "Did
you, Dad?" Dad responded "Yes I did, Clare. She was very nice."
"What was your Dad like, Grandma?" said Clare. Grandmother responded,
"He was nice, too, but I didn't know him very well because he died
when I was only ten years old." Clare's Dad chimed in, "Isn't
it great that Grandma's mum did such a good job taking care of Grandma even
though her Dad wasn't with them?" Clare didn't say anymore right then.
The next day, Sunday, Clare was just talking with her Dad. She said "Dad,
will people be able to see each other in heaven?" Her Dad said "Sure
they will, Clare". Then she asked "Dad, I guess, since you're
older than me, you'll die first." Her Dad responded, "Yes, I guess
I will, Clare." "She said, "I'll sure miss you, Dad."
By this time Dad is having trouble keeping the tears from his eyes. After
a moment of silence, Clare said "Dad, will you please tell Jesus I
love Him when you get there?" Dad responded with tears flowing down
his face "Sure, Clare, I'll be glad to tell Him." This is a wonderful
story of a child's search for the deeper meaning and mystery of death.
JUST FOR A LAUGH ...
The Confused Samaritan
A man was beaten up by robbers on a road to Ayr. He lay there, half dead
and in bad shape. A priest came along, saw him and passed by on the other
side. Next, a monk came by but also walked quickly on the other side. Finally,
a social worker came along, looked at the man and said "Whoever did
this needs help!"
SUNDAY
OBLIGATION
Sunday obligation to attend Holy Mass remains suspended for the time being
and availability is restricted for those wishing to attend. Some of our
parishioners are working during the week and can only attend at the weekend.
Therefore, to make Holy Mass available to everyone we would be grateful
if you wish to attend Mass and are able to attend on a weekday please do
so, leaving seats for those parishioners working during the week. Thank
you.
STANDING ORDERS - PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT
The parishes have taken quite a 'knock' through lockdown when public Mass
was not available for sixteen weeks. This has had a huge impact on our parishes'
finances. Could you consider taking out a Standing Order? It would be of
great benefit to our parish. Forms are available from the Parish Office
and here. Thank
you
HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY

us the details. Deacon Bill Corbett (01292 521208, 07904 248948, Rev.BillCorbett@btinternet.com)
is the Chaplain to Crosshouse Hospital and is assisted by the Priest on
call each week.
ADVERTISER SUPPORT
Our advertisers would welcome your support. We are grateful for their continuing
