A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK (Mark 6:1-6)
Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming
of the sabbath, he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished
when they heard him. They said "Where did the man get all this? What
is this wisdom that has been granted him and these miracles that are worked
through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of
James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with
us?" And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them "A prophet
is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own
house' and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people
by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
The Gospel of the Lord.
PRAYER FOR OUR PARISHES
God
our loving Father, we thank you for blessing our parish with all that we need,
to respond to our vocation to be a missionary community in our locality. We
thank you for all our parish members who, in response to your call, give of
themselves so freely to enrich our parish life in the ways of love and service. We
ask you now, to pour out afresh the gifts of your Spirit upon each one of
us that we may be inspired to serve you in new and creative ways as missionary
disciples, bringing your light to the world. We
ask your blessing upon us as we journey together in hope, through Christ Our
Lord. Amen.
THE
LORD'S DAY AT HOME
If you are housebound or self-isolating at this time, please use these prayers
to unite yourself with the worship of the Universal Church, and your own parish,
this Sunday. If alone, read or say these prayers quietly to yourself. If with
another, or in a family, someone should read the Gospel and others respond.
It might be suitable to find a special, quiet place at home for your Sunday
prayers.

WHY
DO WE BELIEVE IN THE REAL PRESENCE IN THE EUCHARIST?
As Catholics, we believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy
Eucharist - body, blood, soul and divinity. We call it the source and summit
of our Catholic faith - that everything we do, how we live, what motivates
us flows from the Holy Eucharist. Saint John's Gospel gives us a beautiful
portrait of Christ's teaching on the real presence. Throughout the Gospel
of John, Jesus uses what's known as absolute statements or "I am"
statements. "I am the good shepherd." "I am the light of
the world." "I am the vine, you are the branches." Then he
comes to the point where he says "I am the bread of life." It
comes after one of the greatest miracles in all of the Scriptures - the
multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Jesus takes that and he begins
to teach them about how he himself is the true bread from heaven and so
he makes another absolute statement. He says "I am the bread of life
- and if you want to have life, true life, then you have to eat my flesh
and drink my blood." All of those people balked at that. He can't possibly
mean what he's saying. They just couldn't take that next step of faith -
so in one of the saddest moments in all of the Scriptures, those people
begin to walk away. I believe that one of the greatest teachings that Jesus
gives to us on the Holy Eucharist, is what he doesn't say in that moment.
He doesn't run after them and say "Hey, everyone, I didn't really mean
you have to eat flesh and drink blood." He doesn't say that, but he
lets them walk away because he wasn't willing to compromise. He couldn't
compromise what he was teaching them. He turns to the disciples and asks
them "Will you leave too?" - and Peter in his great profession
of faith says "Lord to whom else, shall we go? You have the words of
everlasting life." As we come before the Lord in the Holy Eucharist,
this is the same faith that we bring. Doesn't mean that we understand our
faith completely. We can't, otherwise it wouldn't be our faith- but rather
it's coming before the Lord and taking Jesus at his word. We believe that
he is the resurrection and the life - and if he's the resurrection and the
life, then he is also the bread of life.
PRAYER
FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into
my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually
into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
JIMMY'S
LETTER
Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating
room. She said "How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right?
When can I see him?" The surgeon said "I'm sorry. We did all we
could, but your boy didn't make it." Sally said "Why do little
children get cancer? Doesn't God care any more? Where were you, God, when
my son needed you?" Sally walked out of Children's Mercy Hospital for
the last time after spending most of the last six months there. She put
the bag with Jimmy's belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive
home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She laid
down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep. It
was around midnight when Sally awoke. Laying beside her on the bed was a
folded letter. The letter said 'Dear mum, I know you're going to miss me
but don't think that I will ever forget you or stop loving you. I will always
love you, mum, even more with each day. Someday, we will see each other
again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so
lonely, that's okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with
- but, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the
same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like,
you know. Don't be sad thinking about me. This really is a wonderful place.
Grandma and granddad met me as soon as I got here and showed me around,
but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so special.
I love to watch them fly - and, you know what? Jesus doesn't look like any
of his pictures. Yet, when I saw him, I knew it was him. Jesus himself took
me to see his Father - and guess what, mum? I got to sit on God's knee and
talk to him like I was somebody important. That's when I told him that I
wanted to write you a letter to tell you goodbye and everything. I was sure
that wasn't allowed but you know what mum? God handed me some paper and
his own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name
of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God asked me to
give you the answer to one of the questions you asked him 'Where was he
when I needed him?' God said he was in the same place with me as when his
son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as he always is with all
His children. Tonight, I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper.
I'm sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don't
hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. Signed with love - the Father, Jesus
and Me.'
JUST FOR A LAUGH ...
A parish priest, known for his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and
leave during the middle of his homily. The man returned just before the
conclusion of Mass. Afterwards the priest asked the man where he had gone
"I went to get a haircut" was the reply. "But" said
the Parish Priest, "why didn't you do that before Mass started?"
"Because" the gentleman said, "I didn't need one then."
