Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop John Cunningham from the
pastoral care of the Diocese of Galloway.
The Holy Father has appointed Father William Nolan, Vicar General of the Diocese
of Motherwell and Parish Priest of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in East
Kilbride as Bishop of Galloway.
Bishop-elect
Nolan sent this message to the to the people of Galloway Diocese.
Now that I am beginning to get over the surprise of being appointed Bishop
of Galloway, I am looking forward to working with the clergy and people of the
Diocese to help the faith grow an flourish in the land where Ninian planted
the seeds of faith so long ago. Pope Francis speaks of the 'Joy of the Gospel'
because the teaching of Christ, which the Church spreads throughout the world,
is indeed good news that brings life and hope and joy. I wish to do my best
for the people of the Diocese, though I know that I am hindered by my failings,
my weaknesses, and at this moment, my lack of knowledge of the Diocese. Despite
that I pray, and I ask everyone to pray for me, that I may work with you in
helping to spread the joy of the gospel in the Diocese of Galloway.
